"I don't mind talking about
you, you, you, usually, but occasionally, I wanna talk about ME! I wanna
talk about meee!" ~ Toby Keith
The Ubiquitous Bio Page (circa 2002)
(It was time for a new bio page! If you still want to see the old one, you can check it out here)
It's been quite a few years, and I still don't know what to write! Nothing much has changed, so this 'new' bio may not be all that new.
I'm Denise, or Ith, or even Ithy, if you prefer. The nickname started as my email identity -- Ithildin -- and somehow made its way into real life. I now answer to all, as frightening as that is. (note: the Lord of the Rings movie, they pronounced Ithildin like Eeethildeen! For the record, I've always thought it was pronounced like 'myth' and 'din' and I'm sticking to that!!)
I'm in my thirties, single, and live on the central coast of California. I'm actually a native of the state. First generation American of Canadian parents. With one exception, all my relatives live in Canada or Britain. I share a home with a variety of beings both two and four legged. One of the big reasons I'd love to own my own home is to be able to have as many pets as I like. I love dogs and cats and birds and just about any furry creature. I want a hedgehog! And a pug.
As you might guess, I spend a lot of time with my computer. I've actually made some of my best friends online. In fact, I actually have a social life now, thanks to the folks I've met online. Parties, vacations, and pool playing evenings. So, if anyone tells you that being online is a worthless way to spend time, tell them they are smoking through their hat! Now I'm not advocating running off to meet in person the first soul you meet online -- there are a lot of crazies out there. You need to take the time to get to know them just like you would in person. And then you need to meet at a convention or some other public place first time out. There -- that's my PSA for the day.
Speaking of conventions.... Science Fiction fandom is a big part of my life. While I am involved in media fandom now, my first love is the original book fandom. The first SF book I ever read was "Restoree" by Anne McCaffrey when I was 16 -- I've been reading SF ever since. (Elsewhere on this site, you'll find a small sampling of my favorite authors.) If you've never been to a book con, I'd really recommend going. It's a whole other experience from the media con. And then there's World Con -- more authors, publishers, artists, fans, than you can shake a stick at. I've been to two so far: San Francisco and Anaheim. Should all go as planned, I'll be at ConJose this year.
I also spend a great deal of time writing. It's all fanfic right now, but I have some original stuff floating around that I hope to get down on 'paper' one of these days. You can find my stories over in 'Ithildin Wood' and at the 'Dragon's Hoard Archive'.
I used to Scottish Country dance, until a foot injury and a fall off a ladder sidelined me. I still love it and hope to get my body cooperating one day so I can start again. I'm interested in all aspects of Scottish culture. My mum's family is from Scotland and I've always had a fascination. I love the music, the dance and the art. About the only Scottish thing I'm not into is golf. Though, I have played -- once -- and it was a lot of fun. But I need another expensive hobby like I need another hole in my head, so I resisted the urge.
I run quite a few email lists. One for 'Buffy', 'Enterprise' (and ST in general), Celtic stuff, travel, and a fiction list. I also twiddle with graphics, and have just started working on entire websites for people other than myself. You can check it out at 'Dragonstone Design'.
Hmmm, what else? I love to travel. It's one of my favorite things. New places, meeting people, good food. (To bad I'm terrified of flying!) I especially like visiting places where I can indulge my love of history. I've been fortunate enough to see some pretty incredible things. The Callanish Ring on the Isle of Lewis. Brodgar, Stennes and Skara Brae on Orkney. And the most well known, Stonehenge. My wish list right now includes Newgrange, Avebury, Glastonbury, Tintagel and Shetland. And then I want to start over! Not to mention the more exotic places I'd love to visit, like Egypt, Japan, Greece.... And one of the best things about travel is photography. I really love taking pictures and I hope to have more of my travel photos up on the web one of these days.
I've most recently been to Halifax, Yellowstone, and made a second trip to Toronto. I've also been cross country twice. We have plans for a road trip to Mississippi in the spring, so stay tuned!
Let's see.... Long term goal is to own an inn/B&B/lodge along with my sister/future business partner, April. So check back in ten years and maybe it will have happened! I collect dragons, Winnie the Pooh stuff, and hedgehogs. My favorite colour is purple, followed closely by green. I prefer silver to gold. I'm a political/current events junkie and I'm also very interested in military history. I love going to Disneyland, in fact, I usually have an annual pass.
Some new things I can think of: I finally bought a car: a truck actually. I'm the proud owner of a 1986 GMC Jimmy. I won't even go into how much I've put into repairs! But all in all, I love having a truck. Can't see ever owning a car at this point. And, believe it or not, I got my belly button pierced on my birthday last year! I'd been thinking about it for awhile, and I actually went in for research purposes. Next I knew, I was getting it done! It's six months later (Jan 02) and it seems to have worked out just fine.
...lakes at sunrise, walking on the beach in the winter when a storm is brewing, strolling through the redwoods, a nice glass of Merlot and a roaring peat fire, a really good tequila, playing in the snow, looking at the stars, horseback riding, a hazy autumn afternoon, time spent with good friends.
I think that about does it. Thrilling, no? Thanks for visiting.
Till next decade's bio!
